Tendring Design Award Winner 2009

Date: Wednesday 8th July 2009

Judges have chosen the winner of the Tendring Design Award for 2009.

An extension to Romford House, a residential property in Tendring village, was a clear favourite with those lined-up to pick the building which would collect this prestigious accolade organised by Tendring District Council (TDC).

The judges felt it was "a very fine example of modern contemporary design of a well thought out extension. The attention to detail and build quality was first class."

The award winning architect was Karen Sardell from Andrew Claybonre Architects and the builder was PG Oxley .

The winners will receive a plaque to go on the property and will also go forward to the Regional Planning Achievement Award Scheme.

There were also two commended buildings awards - going to Esplanade Court at Frinton and Barnets Reach at Walton. Both will receive a certificate.

Barnets Reach is a group of terraced houses which was described by the judging panel as "good fun" with its design appropriate to its seafront location.

Sarah Candy, Cabinet Member for Planning at TDC, thanked all those who nominated buildings for the award and to the judges for all their hard work.

"Although only in its second term, the Design Award is proving a successful initiative," she said.

"The aim is to raise the bar and set new standards for buildings in Tendring for the longer term and create a legacy for future generations."

The final five properties selected from those nominated were
Romford House, Tendring;
Barnets Reach, Green Lane, Walton;
41 Esplanade Court, Frinton;
Lawford Place, Lawford and Beth Chatto Tea Rooms, Elmstead Market

The first joint winners in 2007 were the Maltings Development in Manningtree and Bishops Park College. The Martello Tower conversion in Jaywick was highly commended.

The Design Award will be staged next in 2011.
